Save Money and Make Your Own Halloween Costume

Perhaps you’ve checked out the price tags on some of the store bought costumes and were turned off when you realized just how much they’re asking for. Maybe you just want to come up with something creative for your little one. Maybe you and your beloved are hitting up a costume party and you want something that is sure to wow and keep the guests talking well after the party.

Whatever your reasoning is for wanting to make your own Halloween costume, you will realize it’s just not that difficult. You need to figure out what it is that you want to make and then before you know it, you’ll be staring at a costume that is far more creative and unique than anything you could get in the store.

Get Some Inspiration

First and foremost, you need to find some inspiration to get you started. You can start by checking out stores or even websites to zero in on what it is that you are truly after. These may give you a glimmer of an idea that you can turn into a reality with a super cool or cute costume that is sure to stand out from the crowd.

For instance, if you see a tinkerbell costume you like, all you need then is a green dress, cheap wings and a wand made from a wooden spoon with a cardboard star wrapped in tinfoil. For a French maid costume, look for a black dress, tie on a white apron, and bring along a feather duster!

No matter what type of costume you want to go with or for what type of occasion, you are sure to need some inspiration along the way. So go for a source that can give you that and see what gets your wheels of creativity going.

Keep it Simple

You don’t have to hand sew each and every part of the costume, keep it simple. If you are not a seamstress then don’t worry or be intimidated by the notion of sewing.

Sometimes it can be as simple as putting a few different pieces of clothing together and you have an instant costume. It’s really up to you as to how elaborate you want to make it, but if this is your first time or if you don’t have the sewing knack then go for something simple but unique to keep it interesting.

Get your supplies in advance and keep them as close to the theme as possible. If you are going for a gypsy then make a lot out of simple ideas. Go for a cute flowy dress, and then tie a scarf on your head with long flowing jewelry. You see just how easy it can be to create your own costume, and often it can be with whatever you have around the house.

Dress Up to the Theme

If all else fails, then go for a simple dressing up type of costume. Want to go for a Britney Spears look? Then just throw on a skimpy dress and don a long blonde wig. You can see how easy this is and how if you just throw together a few accessories or go for the one part that is pertinent to the costume or idea you are after, that it just takes one identification piece. Keep it simple, have fun with it, and go with what you know to make this a tradition you can carry on each and every Halloween!
